1 rupee coin of 1970 is one of the rare coins of republic of India. Very few coins were released in circulation and hence this particular 1 rupee coin fetches high 4 figure price in the market. There are many fakes available for few hundred rupees and generally the novice coin enthusiasts fall for such fakes.

The proof coin is also rare in nature and is available as a part of Proof set of 1970. The coin is generally available separately from the set as well but one needs to be very careful in buying such coins. The coin weighs 10 gms and is made of Nickel with a diameter of 28mm.

Commemorative coin sets for sale over the counter

India Government Mint located at Mumbai (commonly known as Mumbai Mint) is selling Commemorative coin sets over the counter from January 02, 2012 at their newly inaugurated counter. The counter will be open on all working days between 10AM and 12PM.

Payment can be made either by a Demand Draft or credit/debit cards. Each person is allowed to purchase one set per variety of any theme. It is not known which sets are available for purchase through the counter. However it is highly unlikely that these will include old sets. Most probably only the recently minted coin sets may be available for sale. If anyone visits Mumbai mint for purchasing these coin sets over the counter, please do send us your feedback.

Kolkata mint has started the booking for Set of Rs 100/- and Rs 5/- proof and unc coins. Booking starts from January 2, 2012 and continues until February 29, 2012. Attached below is the ad appearing in leading newspapers. The proof set is available for Rs 3600/- while the unc set is available for Rs 3200/-. The coins can be booked from Mumbai Mint website located at mumbaimint.in.
